Road to Standon
We’re holding our first-ever unsigned bands competition. Since the early days we’ve always championed new music and having booked artists like Florence and the Machine, Friendly Fires and Mumford and Sons before most people had heard of them, we’re hoping the Road to Standon will unearth something special. All genres are allowed, so whether you’re postpop pioneers, a skweee sensation, mathcore to the bone, the latest dubstep genius, an aquacrunk outfit with angst or simply play pub rock you’re more than welcome to enter.
The winner of the Road to Standon will play on the main stage at Standon Calling this summer alongside the likes of Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Liars, Efterklang and The Phenomenal Handclap Band.
Don’t worry, we haven’t come over all X-Factor (honest). It’s just that having been inundated with more demos and links to MySpace pages than we know what to do with, this seemed the fairest way to give unsigned bands the chance to play the festival.
Online voting will begin on May 4th, followed by nationwide regional heats throughout June. Regional finals will be held in London during July before a panel of industry judges (think East London’s answer to Simon Cowell with a hipster moustache, trousers that showcase his pubic hair rather than swallow his chin and an ‘emover’ Mohawk). The victors from this round will then go head-to-head with the winner taking to the main stage during the festival. All other finalists will receive free festival passes.
